Survivorship:
A joint goal of the Nevada Cancer Institute and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Living with cancer can be a challenging and life-changing experience. Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) have teamed up to help cancer survivors live strong through the physical, emotional, and practical challenges of survivorship.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation believes that in your battle with cancer, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. LAF provides practical information and tools cancer survivors need to live strong. LAF focuses on public health initiatives, national advocacy, research, and survivorship education and resources, including LIVESTRONG, the LAF's comprehensive resource for cancer survivors. Located in Austin, Texas, the foundation was founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. For more information, visit www.laf.org and www.livestrong.org.
The mission of the Lance Armstrong Foundation Survivorship Center at NVCI is to enhance the quality and length of survival of all persons diagnosed with cancer and to minimize or stabilize adverse effects experienced during cancer survivorship.
Cancer Survivorship
From individuals diagnosed with cancer to their family, friends, and caregivers, the number of people affected by cancer is tremendous. Advances in early detection and treatment of cancer have turned cancer into a curable and treatable disease. As a result, more people diagnosed with cancer are living and surviving each year. In 2001, an estimated 9.8 million people are surviving cancer, not including caregivers, family and friends.
Survivorship Services
In response to the changing needs of cancer patients, NVCI is supplied by the LAF to develop and provide a program that focuses on the specific needs of cancer survivors. The program offers a variety of services for cancer survivors including general support, education, resource materials, survivor activities, and translation and interpretation services.
The program will be designed specifically by and for cancer survivors including their caregivers, family and friends.
